“Managing sound levels is an intricate process when you consider the complex acoustic environments that schools provide. Areas of intense quiet, like libraries, have to be balanced with vibrant social spaces and recreation areas. In some situations sound has to carry, elsewhere you have to contain it -Taff Ely Learning Campus is a great example of making that design work in practice, relies on careful specification and early participation."

Installation

Siniat’s GTEC Pregybel has been used at the University of Glamorgan’s Taff Ely Learning Campus to help architects Boyes Rees and contractors Laing O’Rourke develop a creative glazed atrium in one of the building’s central areas. These large internal air spaces were particularly challenging as, without careful management, they could have created a resonant sound that would have been intrusive. To mitigate this problem, Siniat suggested using GTEC Pregybel, a perforated acoustic board, to provide the necessary acoustic damping performance within the atrium’s open stairwells and corridors. Other areas of the campus called for even more specialised acoustic management. The music, dance and performing arts studios required a higher-performance specification given the particular need to ensure greater levels of sound insulation.
